Rúben Amorim is facing years of suspension. The 36-year-old trainer of Sporting Portugal has been charged by competition organizer LPFP about his appointment at the Portuguese club, which took place a year ago. If Amorim is actually convicted, he will be suspended from a minimum of one year to a maximum of six years. Sporting meanwhile speaks shame of the case.

Amorim was appointed by Sporting in March last year, which took him over from SC Braga. At the time, the Portuguese trainers union filed a complaint against the young teacher, who was ultimately responsible without having the correct training papers. “We see this as one of the most regrettable and surreal episodes in the history of Portuguese football,” the club said in a comment. “This case and indictment are an indelible blot on Portuguese sport, with possibly international repercussions.”

Sporting refers in the response to Braga, where Amorim held a similar position last year. The trainer’s contract was recently extended with Sporting, so that he is now locked up in Lisbon until the summer of 2024. As a player, Amorim played for Belenenses, Benfica, Braga and the Qatari Al-Wakrah. In addition, the former footballer wore the shirt of the national team of Portugal fourteen times, for which he made his debut in 2010. Shortly after his football retirement in 2017, Amorim joined the Football Association in Lisbon to secure a coaching license.

Amorim became the most expensive Portuguese trainer ever last year when Sporting paid ten million euros to Braga, where he had been employed for only two months. The coach is seen as a great talent and with Sporting Portugal is heading for the first national title since the 2001/02 season. This season, Sporting has not yet lost a game in competition and the leader has a ten-point lead over pursuer FC Porto. In the battle for the Portuguese cup, the team went down in the eighth finals against Marítimo (2-0) at the beginning of January.
