SV Spakenburg firmly refuses to play a possible final of the TOTO KNVB Cup on Sunday, April 30. The amateurs, who humiliated FC Utrecht on Tuesday with a 1-4 win in the quarterfinals, are not allowed to take action on Sundays according to the club’s statutes for religious reasons. The KNVB does not rule out a change in the day on which the final is played in advance.

Spakenburg is the third amateur club in the history of Dutch football to reach the semi-finals of the cup. To reach the final battle in De Kuip, another stunt of the same caliber as Tuesday in Utrecht will be needed, but the KNVB is already taking it into account. The Football Association reports to the NOS that a consultation is planned with the four participants in the semi-final.

The Christian faith plays a major role in the fishing village of Spakenburg: Sunday is the day of rest and the shops are closed that day. The local football club also does not come into action on Sunday, but on Saturday. Spakenburg excludes a one-off exception for a possible historic place in the cup final in advance. “No, that is not possible”, said Spakenburg chairman Marc Schoonebeek General Journal.

Spakenburg realized the cup stunt of the century in Stadium Galgenwaard on Tuesday. “It has never happened that a club with such figures (1-4) wins at an Eredivisie club,” says Spakenburg coach Chris de Graaf. “That is just legendary. I think we will see these images in every cup tournament.” The coach of the Second Division club does not assume a place in the final and hopes for a beautiful poster in the semi-final battle. “Preferably from Feyenoord. De Kuip is legendary.”
