Emilio Ballack is according to the Portuguese TVI24 died in the night from Wednesday to Thursday. Michael Ballack’s eighteen-year-old son had an accident with his quad bike around 2 a.m. The fire brigade from Grândola quickly arrived on the scene, but in the end they were unable to save him.

The accident is said to have taken place near Troia, which is just south of the Portuguese capital Lisbon. The Ballack family has had a house in the area for years and Emilio Ballack was now holidaying there, according to photos he posted on Instagram earlier this week. On Thursday night around 2:10 am, disaster struck. He had an accident with his quad bike and despite the local fire brigade being quickly on the scene, he could not be rescued.

Ballack, a former player of 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and the German national team, had three children with his ex-wife Simone: Louis, Emilio and Jordi. The Portuguese authorities have not yet released anything about Emilio Ballack’s accident, but Chelsea has already expressed its condolences via Twitter. “Everyone associated with Chelsea is shocked and saddened by the death of Emilio Ballack, at the terribly young age of eighteen,” Chelsea wrote. “Our thoughts go out to his father Michael and the rest of the family.”
