Matthijs de Ligt takes it up for Perr Schuurs. In the first half of the season, Schuurs had a permanent base at Ajax and took the old position of De Ligt. As a result, he was regularly compared by the outside world with his illustrious predecessor. At the moment Schuurs cannot match the level that De Ligt reached in the service of Ajax, but in an interview with Football International the Juventus mandator expresses confidence in his colleague.

In the latest edition of the weekly, which is devoted to the Ajax championship, De Ligt is asked for his opinion about the players who play in his position in Erik ten Hag’s team. “At the beginning of the season I thought Perr Schuurs was doing very well”, he says. “He developed strongly, and I thought that was nice to see. He is still sometimes looked at critically, with an Ajax player that is often the case, but sometimes I think that people do not realize that he is still only 21. year. And that there is still a lot of growth in it. “

Schuurs played 38 official matches for Ajax this season. He played in all group matches in the Champions League and alternated good performances with lesser ones. “Of course he sometimes made a mistake, but in the games he also did a lot really well. In my opinion he is sometimes put under a magnifying glass too much, but I still have a lot of faith in him”, De Ligt emphasizes. “Jurriën Timber and Schuurs are just both doing well. They are young boys who get the chance, that also suits Ajax.”

Timber was preferred to Schuurs in the second half of the season. The nineteen-year-old youth exponent had a basic place in Ajax’s last twenty matches, apart from three matches he missed due to contracting the corona virus. “He is a typical Ajax player. Technically very skilled, agile, fast, he can also play well in duels despite his short height”, De Ligt sums up about the 1 meter 79 long stopper. “I think he was always there when he had to be there. He is a revelation at the ball and has taken big steps.”
