Wesley Sneijder does not understand that people in the Netherlands are so enthusiastic about the Dutch national team. He reported that during Veronica Offside on fridaynight. The record international of the Dutch has not seen anything that impresses him in recent weeks and cannot avoid the impression that it is already going to be very difficult to survive the group stage. Sneijder therefore asks the Dutch people to remain realistic.

Sneijder tastes euphoria and confidence around the Dutch national team, but says he understands little of it. “There is a lot of positivity in the Netherlands around the Dutch national team and everyone is talking about becoming world champions, but what is that based on?” asks the former midfielder. “Who have you then? We should become world champions with this team, in the form we are in now and with players who don’t play at their clubs?”

According to Sneijder, the expectations of the Dutch people are much too high and last midweek’s match between Ajax and Liverpool at Anfield serves as an example, according to him. “That is the public opinion now, but I would like to say to people: just relaxed, with both feet on the ground. We have seen it again this week at Ajax at European level. We are not there yet.”

At the 2014 World Cup, where Sneijder himself was present and played under national coach Louis van Gaal, the Dutch national team surprised. Presenter Wilfred Genee adds that according to him, the Dutch is now in a better position. “I don’t understand how you can say that,” the record international responds with incomprehension. “We don’t have a better team now than in 2014? Not by a long shot, right? Then expectations were not there at all and then it’s great that you can go far in the underdog role. Now we have high expectations and you can just out of the group.”
