Extra public is welcome at the three group matches of the Dutch national team at the European Championship, the KNVB reports. The Johan Cruijff ArenA can be filled for a third at the final tournament, which amounts to approximately 16,000 spectators per match. That’s an increase of 4,000 fans over the plans made in April.

The cabinet has given permission to increase the number of fans in the ArenA. This has to do with the current epidemiological situation and the decreasing pressure on care. The three group duels of Oranje fall under the Fieldlab Events. All visitors who want to be present at the matches in Amsterdam must comply with the safety protocols of the Fieldlab investigation and are only allowed access upon presentation of a negative corona test result. At the European Championship, the Netherlands will play in the group successively against Ukraine, Austria and North Macedonia.

Gijs de Jong, tournament director of the European Championship, is of course delighted with the news. “It is fantastic that the corona situation seems to be under better control and so more is possible”, De Jong responds. “We are therefore very happy that we can now make even more fans happy. It is great that this upscaling can be done in a safe and responsible manner. We have worked hard on this with the Ministry of VWS, the municipality of Amsterdam and other partners.”

“EURO 2020 in Amsterdam is, just like the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam, an iconic event”, De Jong continues. “You just want to have as many people as possible. Fans who, after all these years, can finally see the the Dutch play at a final tournament again. In addition, this also increases the experience outside the stadium. All in all, this is a fantastic support for everyone with an the Dutch heart and certainly also for the Dutch national team. “
