Sergiño Dest's season is almost certainly over, reports say Eindhovens Dagblad and Football International Sunday. PSV's medical staff is currently investigating the nature of the left back's injury, which in the worst case will require months of rehabilitation.

PSV will only provide details about Dest when there is more clarity about his injury. Sources around the Eindhoven club leave it to this Eindhovens Dagblad know that the wing defender will in any case be 'out for a while' and that it is a serious injury. It is not known how Dest sustained the injury.

Dest was currently having a strong period at PSV in the left back position. For example, he scored the only goal in the away match against Go Ahead Eagles (0-1 win). The defender, hired from FC Barcelona, has played 37 matches for PSV in all competitions so far. He scored two goals and seven assists.

Leader PSV ends the season in the Eredivisie with away games against SC Heerenveen and Foruna Sittard and home games against Sparta Rotterdam and RKC Waalwijk. Dest will be missing in Heerenveen on Thursday anyway and there is a good chance that he will also have to miss the other three matches due to injuries.

Dest's injury is a setback for trainer Peter Bosz, who does have some alternatives in his selection. Patrick van Aanholt seems to be the most logical replacement, but Mauro Júnior, who usually operates in midfield, can also function as a left back.

Future uncertain

Hans Kraay junior was there last week ESPN still full of praise for Dest. “This very modern right-footed left back is one of the few backs in Europe who not only comes up well and has a nice cross, but also goes straight at the opponent's back at full speed and passes just as easily on the inside as on the outside.”

Kraay junior knows that PSV can permanently bring Dest to Eindhoven in a few months due to the purchase option in the rental deal with Barcelona. “They can of course take him over for ten million euros. But Ajax will also enter the battle for the signature of the man worth ten million,” predicted the reporter who saw Dest excel against bottom and relegated Vitesse (6-0 win).

Dest, by the way, has a past with Ajax. The defender went through the youth academy of the Amsterdam club and made his debut in the main squad in 2019. Despite 38 matches in the first team, a definitive breakthrough was not forthcoming, which is why Dest opted for Barcelona in October 2020. The left back is under contract with the Catalan superpower until mid-2025.
