The United States won the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League on Sunday evening local time. The team of national coach Gregg Berhalter was too strong for Mexico after a necessary extension with 3-2. Bee El Tric ex-PSV player Andrés Guardado was the big schlemiel. He missed a penalty in extra time in extra time, after which Team USA won the Nations League.

Nearly 40,000 spectators saw a spectacular final in Denver, where Jesús Corona took advantage of a mistake in the American defense after just one minute of play. After less than half an hour of play, Giovanni Reyna cleared the deficit: 1-1. Mexico took the lead again eleven minutes before the end, via Diego Lainéz, but the joy was short-lived. Weston McKennie forced extra time three minutes later.

Christian Pulisic scored the winning goal from a penalty kick in the 114th minute. That was a decisive goal, as goalkeeper Ethan Horváth, who had come into the team after 69 minutes for the injured Zack Steffen, turned Guardado’s eleven-meter kick in extra time.

At the United States, Sergiño Dest was substituted for Timothy Weah after an hour. Edson Álvarez left Mexico in the final phase of the extension. With Héctor Moreno and Hirving Lozano, in addition to Guardado, three ex-PSV players were in the base.
