Clarence Seedorf has taken to Instagram to express his support for Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, the trio who have been racially treated online after they missed their penalty in the European Championship semi-final against Italy. The words of the former the Dutch international are well received on social media. Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima and Patrick Kluivert, among others, can appreciate Seedorf’s words.

Immediately after the lost semi-final, Rashford, Sancho and Saka received racist messages via social media. After the English Football Association FA published a strong statement and the English police announced that they were investigating the perpetrators, the football world rallied behind the three. Seedorf also expresses his support for the English internationals, he says on Instagram.

The former player of Ajax and Real Madrid, among others, emphasizes that football players must deal with highs and lows. “What is unacceptable, however, is the despicable abuse and the way these talents are treated on social media by people posing as fans. These are not fans and such behavior is unacceptable,” Seedorf, 45, wrote.

“Unfortunately, this confirms what I already knew about society,” Seedorf continues. “It shows how much effort remains to be made to create a society that is truly inclusive and driven by diversity. Governments, institutions, online platforms and citizens must do everything they can to tackle this kind of abuse, because this situation is no longer acceptable.”

Seedorf then turns to Sancho, Rashford and Saka. The former football player expresses his support for the much-discussed threesome. “They stood up and took full responsibility by representing their country with all their heart and soul. You will continue to shine and I look forward to witnessing the glorious times ahead.” Ronaldo expresses his support for Seedorf’s words with emojis. “well said brother”, says Kluivert.
