Peru has won its first Copa América victory. The team of national coach Ricardo Gareca lost the first game against host country Brazil 4-0, but on Monday evening local time Peru was too strong for Colombia in Goiania 1-2. Sergio Peña of FC Emmen from one of the goalscorers. The win moves Peru to third place in Group B of the tournament.

Colombia had four points left in the first two matches and had not yet conceded a goal, but after seventeen minutes, despite a considerable preponderance, things went wrong for la Tricolor. A bet by Yoshimar Yotun hit the post, after which the detached Peña was able to work the ball in: 0-1. Colombia equalized eight minutes after the break. After a mistake by Christian Ramos, goalkeeper Pedro Gallese committed a foul on Miguel Borja, who scored the equalizer himself from eleven meters.

Colombia had good chances through Borja and Davinson Sánchez, but an own goal dropped the game in favor of the 2019 losing finalist. After a corner in the 64th minute, Yerry Mina chested the ball behind his own goalkeeper. The Copa América is played with only two groups of five countries each. Only the numbers five drop out, after which eight countries go to the quarterfinals.

Peña has had a mixed season. He was only able to make the difference for FC Emmen in the months of April and May: in eight games the Peruvian was good for five goals and three assists. However, that was not enough for self-preservation. It is practically impossible that Peña and compatriot Miguel Araujo, who also belongs to the selection of Peru, will still play in Drenthe next season.

Peña and Araujo have a high non-EU salary of more than four tons and both have a contract until the summer of 2022. A sale is therefore obvious. Clubs from Belgium, Spain and Mexico would have the midfielder in their sights.
