Roger Schmidt has announced PSV’s line-up for the cup match against NAC Breda. The German makes a remarkable change and has again made room for Joël Drommel. The goalkeeper was passed against AZ (1-2) on Saturday, but saw how his replacement Yvon Mvogo also did not make a certain impression. For that reason, Schmidt intervenes again and puts Drommel back under the bar. Noni Madueke will also return to the team. The quarter-final match in the Philips Stadium will start at 7 p.m. and is led by Martin van den Kerkhof.
“This is exactly what you do not want, but everything can be explained with today’s science,” Schmidt reacted to Mvogo’s blow to AZ. “If Yvon hadn’t made a mistake and we won, they would probably have said it was a good decision. I understand how it works and that the coach is then looked at.” It was the second starting place of the season for Mvogo, who earlier appeared at the kick-off in the away match against Heracles Almelo in August. On Wednesday during the closing press talk, Schmidt returned to the goalkeeper issue.
“Normally you don’t change the keeper so often,” said the PSV coach, who did not rule out Mvogo having to sit on the bench again. “But to be honest, I expect top performance in his position. We play professional football, not amateur football. I expect performance from everyone. I also switch outfield players if they don’t perform, when I have other options. The goalkeepers are a bit of a special case , but the law of performing to stay in the starting lineup also applies to goalkeepers.”
In addition to the goalkeeper change, the return of Noni Madueke is also striking. The attacker was sidelined for a long time with an injury and made his last minutes in early December in the away game against Real Sociedad. Marco van Ginkel will not be there. The midfielder was substituted for Ajax after more than an hour and was not there against AZ either. Schmidt opts for Ibrahim Sangaré, Erick Gutiérrez and Mario Götze in midfield, so that Joey Veerman moves to the reserve bench.
