Thomas Ouwejan makes the switch from AZ to Schalke 04. The club from Alkmaar announced on Tuesday that the 24-year-old left back is moving to Gelsenkirchen for a season on a rental basis. Ouwejan has also extended his contract with AZ by one year until the summer of 2024. Schalke announces that an option to buy has been stipulated in the rental deal.

Ouwejan is rented out by AZ for the second season in a row. Last season he wore the Udinese shirt. In the Serie A, the left back played fifteen games. So next season, he will start working for Schalke, which recently was relegated from the Bundesliga. The German club hopes to return to the highest podium as soon as possible and is therefore working hard on putting together the new selection.

Ouwejan was added to AZ’s youth academy in 2007 after he had put himself in the spotlight as a talent of De Foresters. At the end of 2015, he made his debut in the main squad in the Europa League match against Athletic Club. He made 110 appearances in the first team so far. He lost the battle for the left back position to the Dutch international Owen Wijndal. At Schalke, Ouwejan is the fifth reinforcement for next season after Danny Latza, Simon Terodde, Marcin Kaminski and Victor Pálsson.

“Thomas Ouwejan is a young, dynamic player who, with his 24 years, has a lot of experience. On the one hand because he was a leading player in the Eredivisie at AZ, on the other because he has proven his qualities in Serie A, ”says sporting director Rouven Schröder on Schalke’s club website. “We are happy that Thomas has chosen us. With his way of playing he will be a reinforcement for us. ”
