Newcastle United are about to sign Santiago Muñoz, various Mexican media report. The transfer has evoked quite a few reactions on social media, because the impending transfer of the eighteen-year-old striker shows astonishingly many similarities with the film GOAL! from 2005. The film classic is about the fictional character Santiago Munez, who makes the switch from Mexico to Newcastle United.

The first part of GOAL! appeared in 2005, followed by part two in 2007 and part three in 2009. The FIFA-supported film is about Munez, who is discovered as an illegal Mexican immigrant in Los Angeles as a former Newcastle United player. He successfully completes an internship, makes the switch to England and after a difficult start breaks through in the main squad of the Magpies. Sixteen years after the film was released, the script seems to be set in reality.

The Mexican branch of ESPN reports that Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Santos Laguna on the arrival of Muñoz. The transfer is to be announced in the coming hours. It is reported that Newcastle United will hire the young striker for a season, with an option to buy. Newcastle United flirted with Muñoz in February, sharing a tweet from Santos Laguna announcing the striker’s first starting spot in the Mexican league.

Muñoz was born in El Paso, which is close to the Mexican border in the southern United States. However, the striker has Mexican nationality and has played in several youth teams in Mexico. Muñoz broke through in the first team of Santos Laguna last year, for whom he scored three goals and three assists in 19 games. Because his contract now expired in a year and he refused to renew that contract, he was forced to leave by the Mexican club. If he is indeed rented out, it is obvious that he will extend his contract with Santos Laguna.
