Liverpool lost their connection with league-leader Manchester City on Tuesday evening. Mohamed Salah missed a Premier League penalty for the first time in 1522 days against Leicester City and also failed to score the double rebound. Salah had taken advantage of the last fifteen penalties in the English league. Against the ratio, Liverpool fell behind after the break, which could not be recovered: 1-0 for Leicester. Number two Liverpool are now six points behind City, while Leicester climbs to ninth place.

Virgil van Dijk returned to Liverpool from a corona infection and took his permanent place in the heart of the defense. Leicester had to contend with many absentees, which forced Brendan Rodgers to put two midfielders in the back. That went wrong in the sixteenth minute for the Foxes, when opportunity defender Wilfred Ndidi tripped Mohamed Salah in the penalty area.

Salah saw his penalty turned by Kasper Schmeichel and headed the rebound off the crossbar. The Egyptian even got a third chance to score, but hit the ball wrong with the right. Liverpool then remained the much better match, but also continued to miss great opportunities. Schmeichel made a great save on a shot from very close range from Salah and saw dangerous attempts by Jordan Henderson and Diogo Jota fail to reach his goal. Once, Leicester itself broke out dangerously in the first half and Trent Alexander-Arnold had to clear a threatening effort by James Maddison from the goal line.

Even after the break, Liverpool took the initiative firmly. A huge opportunity followed in the 55th minute for Sadio Mané, who was launched by Jota and shot wildly over. Almost out of nowhere Leicester struck across the field four minutes later. Substitute Ademola Lookman entered the Liverpool penalty area with the ball at his foot and found space to poke it past Van Dijk’s standing block into the short corner: 1-0. Liverpool went looking for a result in the final phase and Jota headed just wide from a corner. Van Dijk tried it with a dangerously low shot, which found Schmeichel’s foot in its path.
