Ronald Koeman thinks it is unwise for Memphis Depay to publicly support his friend Quincy Promes. The Atlético Madrid striker recently encouraged Promes with photos and texts, but the national coach wants Memphis not to comment on the situation of the Spartak Moscow attacker.

Memphis Depay once again emphasized his friendship with the much-discussed Promes via Instagram at the beginning of January. “In Highs and Lows, Ima Real life Brother, F*ck a fake friend,” he wrote in a post with the accompanying hashtag #2023throwback.

The series of photos shows, among other things, that Memphis is on holiday with Promes and Paul Pogba, whom he knows from their joint period at Manchester United. Promes seemed to appreciate Memphis' message, because the Spartak Moscow attacker responded with the text 'REAL BROTHER'.

“I wouldn't do it myself,” Koeman responded during the press conference prior to the friendly matches with Scotland and Germany when asked what he thought of Memphis' support for Promes.

“I haven't talked to Memphis about it yet, but Nigel de Jong has already talked to him about it. Am I going to talk about it with him?”

“Well, I think that sometimes you make it easier for yourself if you don't do those kinds of things. It always arouses aversion and criticism. I think you should stay away from there as much as possible. This is a very delicate issue.”

Promes was recently arrested in Dubai at the request of the Netherlands for his involvement in cocaine trafficking and for stabbing a family member.
