Sergio Busquets is the new Barcelona captain. The midfielder succeeds Lionel Messi, Barcelona announced on Monday afternoon. The choice of Ronald Koeman is not a big surprise, because Busquets was already second captain of Barcelona last season. Gérard Piqué, Sergi Roberto remain reserve captains, while Jordi Alba joins the squad of captains.

Busquets, 33, is the oldest of the four captains after Piqué (34). He was also Spain’s captain at the European Championship this summer. In addition, he wore the captain’s armband in the match against Juventus (3-0 win) for the Trofeo Joan Gamper on Sunday. Busquets went through the youth academy of Barcelona and already played 629 games in the main squad. Messi has been the captain of Barcelona since 2018. He then succeeded Andrés Iniesta.

Alba reports for the first time in the company of captains. The left-back has been playing for Barcelona since the summer of 2012 and has made 385 official appearances for the club. Piqué has pitched 566 times since joining from Manchester United in 2008, while 29-year-old Sergi Roberto comes from his own youth academy and has made 304 first-team appearances.
