Maximiliano Romero has been offered to River Plate, reports TyC Sports† The Argentine superpower is looking for a new striker, as Julian lvarez will leave for Manchester City next summer. The name of the 23-year-old PSV striker is now being discussed internally at River Plate, although a possible transfer is labeled as ‘not easy’ by the Argentine television channel.

Manchester City already announced the arrival of lvarez last month. River Plate is looking forward to an amount of seventeen million euros – which can increase by one and a half million euros due to bonuses – for the 21-year-old striker. Álvarez has already signed a contract with Manchester City until mid-2027, but is still on loan to River Plate until the end of the season. As a result, the Argentine top club still has a few months to find a successor.

The name of Valentín Castellanos, who was also linked to Feyenoord, was at the top of River Plate’s wish list. The 23-year-old striker – born in Argentina, but ended up at New York City FC via Chile and Uruguay – turns out to be unachievable. Romero has been offered to River Plate for the past few days and his name is now being evaluated on the offices in Buenos Aires. The striker still has a contract with PSV until mid-2023, making next summer the last moment to sell him before he ends up in his last contract year.

PSV took over Romero from Vélez Sarsfield in January 2018 for ten million euros. In the past four years – with the exception of a year spent on loan from his former club – Romero has played just 14 games, mainly due to injuries, in which he scored a goal and two assists. This season, Romero is struggling with injuries, as a result of which he only made it to ten games in the main squad. Rik Elfrink – PSV watcher for the Eindhovens Dagblad – writes that Romero is currently rehabilitating in Argentina and is expected back at PSV in April.
