Valentijn Driessen does not have a good word for Louis van Gaal’s reaction to a reporter from Veronica Inside during the press conference on Thursday. The national coach of the Dutch national team fell out of nowhere against cameraman Joey Dekker, when the latter wanted to know something about Matthijs de Ligt. According to Driessen, Van Gaal took the opportunity to make a point towards Veronica Inside.

Van Gaal discussed a question about De Ligt in detail during the press conference, but came back from it afterwards, he said. “These kinds of comments from a national coach are also not good, because you are going to talk about individual players,” said the coach. “I find the questions impertinent. I am not going to talk about your qualities as a cameraman, am I?” he asked rhetorically to Dekker, the cameraman from Veronica Inside who asked him the question about De Ligt. “I don’t think that’s possible. You have a big mouth.”

In the podcast Kick off by The Telegraph says Driessen to find it ‘ridiculous’ that Van Gaal reacted to Dekker in that way. “Especially because he has previously spoken about the qualities of Noa Lang, Mark Flek, Virgil van Dijk,” said the newspaper’s chief of football. “But this cameraman has an employer behind him that Louis van Gaal doesn’t like and that is Veronica Inside. They were great questions, as he always asks good questions. So this was a weird outburst to make a point towards Veronica Inside.”

According to Driessen, it is the most normal thing in the world for a trainer to explain the development of individual players. “A national coach is there to talk about, among other things, the players,” he continues. “It happens every time he says: ‘I shouldn’t say this’. But in the meantime he does say it. That is a case of repentance comes after sin. This is actually not part of it. That boy just does his job and then has to you let everyone in his value.”
