Ridgeciano Haps will now play his international matches for Suriname, the Surinamese Football Association reports on Twitter on Tuesday. The fullback of Feyenoord has dual nationality and so far only played one game for the Netherlands Under-20. With his choice, Haps follows the example of Mitchell Te Vrede, who announced on Monday that he wanted to play his international matches for Suriname. Te Vrede is currently under contract with Al-Fateh in Saudi Arabia.

“We are delighted that Ridgeciano Haps and Mitchell Te Vrede have been added to the selection,” writes the Surinamese association. Haps is no longer a fixed value at Feyenoord this season, where he has been surpassed in the pecking order by Tyrell Malacia. It is a luxury position for trainer Dick Advocaat, who recently described both defenders as potential players for the Dutch national team. “And I mean that too”, said the trainer of Feyenoord. “Only Malacia is doing great as a left back at the moment. But what I said before, if I were with another club, I would always get Haps for the money you can probably pick him up for. He’s an excellent left back. “

With the arrival of Haps and Te Vrede, the selection of Suriname is increasingly taking shape on the way to the World Cup and now houses several former Eredivisie players. For example, Florian Jozefzoon, Kelvin Leerdam, Ramon Leeuwin, Warner Hahn, Ryan Donk and Diego Biseswar are part of the selection of national coach Dean Gorré. Suriname has a good start in the World Cup qualifying series and managed to win the first two matches fairly easily against the Cayman Islands (3-0) and Aruba (0-6). In June, the next two games await their way to the final round in Qatar.

After two duels, Canada leads the group, followed by Suriname. On June 8, both countries will meet in a mutual duel. The group winners will qualify for the next round, which will be played against one of the other five group winners. If this round is also survived, a final round will follow. This includes duels with top countries such as Costa Rica, Mexico and the United States. The best three countries qualify directly for the World Cup, the number four ends up in the play-offs.
