THIS was a typical derby in which no mercy was given or asked.

On top of that, Thursday’s second Cape Town derby between Stellenbosch and Cape Town City was tainted with controversial and poor decisions by the match officials.

However, this did not stop the Premier League newcomer Stellenbosch from walking away with the points and bragging rights against its Cape Town neighboring team Cape Town City.

Leletu Skelem’s cannon shot from outside the goal area after half-time was the difference in Stellies’ 1-0 victory in the Tuks Stadium.

In addition to Skelem’s fantastic goal, the two big points of discussion that will definitely make the tongues clap are Kermit Erasmus’ perky chip before half-time that was turned down for offside play.

It is clear that Erasmus was onside and the goal should have been awarded.

The other issue is when City’s Abbubaker Mobara’s dangerous tackle on Asavela Mbekile was not penalized with a red card.

The ref was definitely on another planet when he gave Mbekile a yellow card instead of posting Mobara.

Tashreeq Morris missed a sitter after the hour mark with his header from just in front of the goal that would have City drawn. Taariq Fielies’s shot from inside the goal area late in the game hit the upright.

The victory ensured Stellies’ status for next season and it is well deserved.
