The negotiations between Vitesse and Remko Pasveer about a longer cooperation have been thwarted by Ajax, writes the Gelderlander. The Telegraph initially reported that the Arnhem team and the 37-year-old goalkeeper did not agree on the contract duration. The regional newspaper states that the negotiations were immediately stopped because Ajax reported to him and that the talks between the Amsterdammers and Pasveer are already in the ‘final phase’.

Vitesse announced on Thursday evening that Pasveer is not going to extend his expiring contract and therefore leaves transfer-free at the end of the season. The goalkeeper received a contract proposal that, according to Vitesse, ‘does justice to his stature as captain and supporting player’, but still opts for a summer departure. The Telegraph wrote that there was talk of “advanced negotiations” between Pasveer and Vitesse, but that the duration of the contract prevented the parties from reaching an agreement.

Pasveer wanted to extend for two years, while Vitesse did not want to go further than a one-year contract. As a result, the negotiations were delayed and that gave Ajax the opportunity to hinder Vitesse. De Gelderlander writes that the parties were in talks about a new, one-year contract, but that these negotiations were stopped after Ajax reported to Pasveer. The team from Amsterdam announced their interest in Pasveer around the cup final between Ajax and Vitesse (2-1) and the goalkeeper could, according to the Gelderlander not resist the ‘financial and sporting temptation’. As a result, his farewell to Vitesse ‘came very quickly’.

Pasveer has a one-year contract at Ajax and the intention is that he will act as second goalkeeper behind Maarten Stekelenburg in Amsterdam, as Kjell Scherpen is not considered suitable for this position. However, the experienced closing post would see opportunities and would like to compete with Stekelenburg. At the same time, it becomes clear that Ajax no longer counts on André Onana for next season, who has been suspended for a year due to doping use. Negotiations to extend his contract until mid-2022 have been halted.

The departure of Pasveer means that Vitesse has to look for a new goalkeeper, as there will be one goalkeeper left with Jeroen Houwen next summer. De Gelderlander writes that Lars Unnerstall has been emphatically in the picture in Arnhem in recent years, but he will certainly not be Vitesse’s new goalkeeper. Unnerstall will exchange PSV for FC Twente next summer. Pasveer has been under contract with Vitesse since 2017. His first year under Leonid Slutsky was difficult, but now he is a permanent fixture and even wears the captain’s armband after Bryan Linssen’s departure to Feyenoord last summer.
