Tim Breukers hangs his football boots on the willows. The 33-year-old defender of Heracles Almelo is in his last weeks as a professional football player, his club announced on Tuesday evening. With 272 appearances, Breukers is the player with the largest number of appearances in the Eredivisie for the club from Almelo.

Last month it became clear that Heracles wanted to continue with Breukers for longer, but he himself has decided to end his career. “That choice was not easy. But after several conversations and sleepless nights, I decided in consultation with the club management to stop. I weighed everything up against each other, including the physical discomforts that occur more often. I could have continued for another year. , but I was not 100 percent behind that, “Breukers explains.

“Then I can’t make it to the club and supporters to continue, that’s not how I am. That’s why I made this decision, no matter how difficult it was”, he says. The right back played 24 times for Heracles in the Eredivisie this season. He was ousted from the base last month by 21-year-old Noah Fadiga. “I had a wonderful time at this club”, he says. “And I can look back with pride on a great career. But before the end is finally there, I want to end the season with the team.”

Breukers switched from Quick ’20 to Heracles in 2007. He made his debut on December 2, 2007 in an away match against Feyenoord and left in 2012 for fellow countryman FC Twente. Breukers became the fourth player to go from Heracles to Twente, but there was no breakthrough. He played only 23 matches in the Eredivisie for the club, was rented out to Heracles in the second half of the 2014/15 season and then returned permanently to Almelo. Technical director Tim Gilissen says that Breukers will start working ‘within the organization’ of Heracles after the season.
