Real Madrid has confirmed on the club website that it is parting ways with Marco Asensio. Through the statement, in which the 27-year-old Spaniard is thanked for the past seven seasons, the club confirms what has been in the air for some time: Asensio will leave Real on a free transfer after this season. A switch to Paris Saint-Germain therefore seems even closer.

“Real Madrid would like to express its gratitude and affection for Marco Asensio, a player who has defended our logo and shirt for seven seasons,” it read. “We will never forget his career and exemplary behavior throughout that time. Real Madrid is and will remain his home and we wish him and his family every success in this new phase.”

Last Thursday knew the Athletic already to report with certainty that Asensio will continue his career in Paris, where he will sign a long-term contract. He has turned down an offer from Aston Villa: PSG’s offer was more interesting than his the Villans and so it is really only a question of how long Asensio will sign in the Parc des Princes.

Asensio was taken over from Real Mallorca in 2015 when he was twenty years old. Since then he has won numerous trophies: seventeen in total, including the Champions League three times and LaLiga three times. Coach Carlo Ancelotti recently indicated after the duel with Sevilla (2-1 win) that he would have liked to continue with the multifunctional attacker. “I would be sad if he left, because he is an important player for us. We will have to deal with his departure one way or another.”
