A 4-0 aggregate win over Tottenham has seen RB Leipzig progress into this UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter final, and extended their unbeaten run in the competition to six games (W4, D2). Notably though, whilst only one of those matches was goalless at HT, Leipzig netted in both halves in just two of those six fixtures.
The German outfit have also lost just one of their last 16 competitive matches (W8, D7, L1), whilst only 25% of their games during that period saw a goalless first half. The first goal will likely be important though, as eight of the nine games during that time that ended with a winner, saw the team that scored first emerge victorious.
Similarly, Atlético Madrid’s last seven La Liga (LL) wins all saw them net the opener, as well as their last eight UCL victories (regulation time only). In contrast, the Spanish side have lost five of the previous six UCL matches in which they conceded first (D1, L5 – regulation time only).
They’ve done well after HT in recent games though, as evidenced by the fact three of their last four LL wins saw a goalless first half. In fact, Atlético usually confine their best play to one half or the other, which is why they’ve scored in both halves in just one of their last 12 UCL fixtures.
Players to watch: Emil Forsberg has netted four goals across Leipzig’s last four UCL games – three after the 85th minute. Meanwhile, Álvaro Morata’s last three UCL goals for Atlético have all been scored after the 75th minute (includes one extra-time strike).
Stat attack: Four of Leipzig’s last eight UCL goals came from the penalty spot.
Atlético’s last seven UCL wins (90 minutes only) have come via a 1-0 or 2-0 scoreline.
Four of the last six competitive goals Leipzig have conceded arrived after the 85th minute.
