Domenico Tedesco is the new trainer of RB Leipzig, the German club announced through the official channels. The 36-year-old coach is the successor to the dismissed Jesse Marsch and signs a contract until mid-2023 in Leipzig. Tedesco was without a club after he left Spartak Moscow last summer.

Marsch received his congé as trainer of RB Leipzig a week ago, after the home defeat against Union Berlin was the last straw. The American coach had come over from Red Bull Salzburg last summer to take over the baton from Julian Nagelsmann who left for Bayern Munich. After Marsch’s dismissal, Roger Schmidt would have been a dream candidate at RB Leipzig, but he did not want to leave PSV in the meantime.

Schmidt still has a contract until mid-2022 and will follow that commitment kicker in any case, serve out, although PSV would have already cautiously indicated that they want to continue with the German coach. In any case, he is not making the switch to RB Leipzig now, because the club has found a new trainer with Tedesco. His name fell in East Germany last week, as did Erdin Terzic (technical director at Borussia Dortmund).

Tedesco worked at VfB Stuttgart (in youth), TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (in youth), Erzgebirge Aue and Schalke 04 before joining Spartak Moscow in October 2019. He was active there until last summer and after his departure from the Russian top club, he was out of work. At the same time, RB Leipzig says goodbye to assistant Achim Beierlorzer, who was still responsible for the team on an interim basis during the Champions League match with Manchester City last week.

With Andreas Hinkel and Max Urwantschky, Tedesco gets his trusted staff at his disposal, as they previously also worked at Spartak Moscow. The new RB Leipzig coach will be presented on Thursday afternoon and will be on the reserve bench for the first time next Saturday, when Borussia Mönchengladbach visits the Red Bull Arena. RB Leipzig currently occupies eleventh place in the Bundesliga.
