Quincy Promes is without a club with immediate effect. The 32-year-old striker, who is still stuck in Dubai, was told on Monday that his contract with Spartak Moscow will not be extended, the Russian top club confirmed in a press release. The contract expired on 30 June.

“Quincy Promes missed the second half of the season completely due to personal reasons that prevented him from returning to Russia after the winter training camp in the UAE,” Spartak wrote in the press release. “Unfortunately, these circumstances are still in place and at this stage it is not possible to talk about the resumption of Quincy's time at the club.”

Spartak is surprisingly keeping the door open for Promes. “Spartak hopes that the parties can return to this issue in the future.”

Promes left with Spartak for the United Arab Emirates during the winter break for a training camp, but the attacker would not return to Russia with his team. Upon leaving the country, Promes was arrested at the airport.

Promes' arrest was related to an extradition request from the Netherlands. The ex-Ajax player was sentenced to six years in prison in February for large-scale cocaine trafficking. Promes was already sentenced to one and a half years in prison in June 2023 for stabbing a cousin during a party in Abcoude.

Promes is still awaiting extradition to the Netherlands and has been in custody in Dubai for months.
