When Germany takes on England in the eighth final of the European Championship next Tuesday, German fans are not welcome. This is apparent from an internal email from the German Football Association that has been seen by the news agency DPA. The reason is the corona measures in force in Great Britain. According to English media, both countries will receive 10,000 tickets, although the German Football Association will only use 2,000 to sell to Germans living in England.

Due to the mandatory quarantine on arrival in England, the proportion of German fans will most likely be limited on Tuesday. “Fans traveling with tickets to a match taking place before the end of the quarantine period will be stopped at the border,” the German embassy in Great Britain announced. The cards will therefore mainly go to Germans living in England. About 300,000 Germans live in Great Britain, of which 50,000 in the London area.

The rules for fans wishing to travel from Germany are clear. They must be able to present a negative PCR test upon arrival in the country. Fans must also have tested negative on the second and fifth day after arrival. Only then can the quarantine be terminated early in the event of negative test results. Great Britain has been classified as a risk area by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There could also be consequences on the return journey, including a fourteen-day quarantine without the possibility of taking a self-test.

The same scenario also occurs with Austria and Italy, who meet at Wembley on Saturday evening for the eighth final. Austria national coach Franco Foda has meanwhile proposed to move the game to allow more supporters to attend the game. “It would be insane if our fans couldn’t be there,” he said. “Then it has no added value for me to play in London. It is not that Austria qualifies for the last sixteen every day.”
