Desiree van Lunteren opts for a striking switch in the Pure Energie Eredivisie women. The 28-year-old midfielder will exchange Ajax for PSV at the end of this season, the Eindhoven club announced on Wednesday afternoon. After the successful medical examination, Van Lunteren signed a contract that binds her to PSV until mid-2023.

Many followers of women’s football speak of a surprising choice, but Van Lunteren thinks otherwise. “I can imagine that it is seen that way, but for me the choice is logical”, the right-footed midfielder emphasizes in a statement on the PSV website. “I was ready for something new and wanted to stay active in the Netherlands. The first conversation I had with PSV, the trainer and manager, was very positive. After that the choice was quite easy. PSV is a beautiful and large club that wants to become champions. That is all that matters and I see it as a challenge to contribute to that “, said Van Lunteren, in her second period with the Ajax women’s team.

Van Lunteren, who became the mother of a son in December, is currently working hard on her return to Ajax Women. “That was immediately clear to me”, the acquisition of PSV continues her explanation. “From the moment I got pregnant, I knew that I wanted to come back. I am not done playing football at the highest level and I really enjoy the alternation between being a mother and playing football. Maybe because of this I have taken a step in empathy. I can use that again during training sessions and in the field “, Van Lunteren concludes.

The experienced midfielder made a total of 84 caps for the Oranje Leeuwinnen, before retiring as an international in November 2019. With the national team, she won the European title in her own country in 2017, while two years later the World Cup final was reached. In the final battle, the United States turned out to be too strong (0-2 defeat). Earlier in her career, Van Lunteren worked for AZ, Telstar and SC Freiburg.
