PSV wants to break open and extend the contract of technical manager John de Jong until mid-2022, it reports Eindhovens Dagblad Wednesday. The current number two in the Eredivisie is satisfied with his work and has therefore asked him whether he would like to stay longer in the Philips Stadium. According to the newspaper, the intention is that trainer Roger Schmidt and general manager Toon Gerbrands will continue to form the ‘important triumvirate’ next season.

The 44-year-old De Jong was appointed in 2018 as successor to Marcel Brands, who left for Everton. According to the regional newspaper, De Jong sees a longer stay, which means that a new contract ‘does not seem very far away’. With a view to continuity, PSV hopes that Schmidt and Gerbrands will also remain in their role. De Jong was previously associated with AS Roma, but it did not come to a switch. He is reportedly not unwelcome to PSV’s new proposal.

De Jong faces a busy transfer period. He is expected to make a number of large purchases and sales. Donyell Malen and captain Denzel Dumfries seem to be working on their last months in the service of PSV. In addition, Mexican midfielder Érick Gutiérrez seems to be heading for the exit in the Philips Stadium, while the ED previously also mentioned Timo Baumgartl as a candidate to leave Eindhoven behind. With a view to the new season, De Jong has already completed his first incoming transfer; 24-year-old keeper Joël Drommel has been taken over from FC Twente for 3.5 million euros.

De Jong will have a large budget in the coming transfer summer. PSV reported a capital injection of an expected fifty million euros last week. According to Gerbrands, De Jong can trade faster on the transfer market because of the extra millions. “We are healthy and this is only to increase effectiveness. Where we first had to wait for an outgoing transfer, we can now act preventively ”, says Gerbands in The Telegraph.
