Good news for PSV: the Eindhoven players can still have Jordan Teze in the Europa League match against Omonia Nicosia on Thursday evening. PSV has the defender, who initially was not allowed to enter Cyprus due to an earlier corona infection, rushed over from Eindhoven to take part in the game, the club reports. Eran Zahavi has not received permission and remains in the Netherlands.

PSV has been suffering from a persistent corona outbreak within the club for weeks. The people of Eindhoven have to do without Denzel Dumfries, Cody Gakpo, Pablo Rosario, Maxime Delanghe, Joël Piroe, Timo Baumgartl and Nick Viergever in Cyprus. The seven players are infected with the virus. Zahavi and Teze had already recovered from their infection, but were not allowed to enter the country due to the guidelines in Cyprus: persons who tested positive earlier this month will not be allowed on the island.

Over the past 24 hours, PSV worked hard to get the players still entitled to play. The club tried to create an exceptional position for Zahavi and Teze in collaboration with UEFA. Both PSV and UEFA were only informed of the line-up of the Cypriots on Tuesday. Zahavi and Teze then stayed behind in Eindhoven. The latter has now received permission from the Cypriot authorities to travel, but Zahavi has not. PSV does not report the reason for this.

Zahavi showed on Wednesday evening that he absolutely disagreed with the decision of Cyprus not to admit him. The Israeli striker wrote on his Instagram Stories, “Football corona tests and regulations are fucking bullshit!” Zahavi and Teze got off the plane at the last minute accompanied by customs on Wednesday that brought the rest of PSV’s selection to Cyprus. The plane was to take off at 10:00 am; at seven minutes to ten, Zahavi and Teze were taken off the plane. The Cyprus government had contacted UEFA and threatened a mandatory multi-day quarantine in Cyprus for the entire PSV team if Zahavi and Teze were to travel.
