Eran Zahavi was injured on Friday evening during the World Cup qualifier between Austria and Israel (4-2). The striker sustained a knee injury. According to national coach Willi Ruttensteiner, the PSV attacker heard something click in his knee. It is a new setback for the Eindhoven residents, after trainer Roger Schmidt saw his infirmary fill up in recent weeks.

After 64 minutes of play, the game was over for Zahavi. At a 2-2 score, the Israeli striker was replaced by Real Valladoli striker Shon Weissman. “Eran asked if he could continue playing, but I saw that he was no longer fit and we decided to replace him,” said the national coach afterwards. Without Zahavi on the field, Israel went down 4-2. This has no consequences for the World Cup qualification, as Ruttensteiner’s team was already eliminated.

The seriousness of Zahavi’s injury is not yet clear. He is the umpteenth PSV player to report to the infirmary. In the last game before the international match against Fortuna Sittard (1-4), Schmidt was already unable to rely on Davy Pröpper, Cody Gakpo, Noni Madueke and Yorbe Vertessen, while Jordan Teze suffered a hamstring injury in Sittard. Joël Drommel then had to sign out sick for the Dutch national team.

PSV will pick up the thread in the Eredivisie after the international match with a home game against Vitesse on Saturday 20 November (4.30 pm). Five days later, the important Europa League game against Sturm Graz is scheduled.
