PSV has now also officially announced the departure of Denzel Dumfries through the official channels. The 25-year-old wing defender already set foot on Italian soil on Thursday to complete his transfer. Dumfries successfully passed the medical examination on Friday and subsequently signed a multi-year contract with the reigning champion of Italy.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, PSV has a transfer fee of 12.5 million euros left over from the sale of Dumfries. Depending on the sporting performance of the defender and/or the club, this can increase during the contract period on the basis of variable bonuses. That would amount to another 2.5 to 3 million euros. It Eindhovens Dagblad spoke of ‘easily attainable bonuses’. This brings the total to between fifteen and twenty million euros, as PSV has demanded from the first moment for the surrender of the captain’s two-year contract from last season.

The transfer from Dumfries was delayed for a while this summer. The wing defender was one of the stars of the Dutch at the European Championship, but according to the Eindhovens Dagblad eventually lost interest. In addition to Inter, Everton was also interested, but that interest was not concrete for the time being. PSV was now slowly but surely faced with a dilemma. Dumfries enjoyed a longer holiday after the European Championship and was initially given the space to make a transfer together with Donyell Malen.

Dumfries recently returned to De Herdgang, but was training there for himself for the time being and was not part of the match selection for the Champions League duels with FC Midtjylland because he did not want to disrupt the current hierarchy and group dynamics. It Eindhovens Dagblad wrote that a situation arose in which PSV had to think about whether Dumfries should be registered for the last preliminary round of the Champions League against Benfica. In the end, the transfer has already gained momentum before that, so that he is now continuing his career at Inter.

Dumfries played for PSV for three years, which took over from sc Heerenveen three years ago for 5.5 million euros. Dumfries, good for 124 official matches in the PSV uniform, previously played for Sparta Rotterdam, which only took him away from the amateurs of Barendrecht when he was eighteen. He will be the eleventh Dutchman employed by the Italian top club, after Faas Wilkes, Dennis Bergkamp, Wim Jonk, Aron Winter, Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Wesley Sneijder and Stefan de Vrij, among others. Inter, the reigning national champions of Italy, will start the new season in the Serie A next Saturday with a home game against Genoa.
