PSV has hired Patrick van Aanholt on a rental basis, the club confirmed via the official channels on Tuesday. The 32-year-old left back is rented from Galatasaray until the end of the season, with the Eindhoven team also stipulating an option to extend the stay by one year. Van Aanholt has a contract in Turkey until mid-2024, although given his role as a reserve it seems unlikely that he will still be active for Galatasaray after the summer.

“I can’t wait to get started. I already know a number of guys, such as Xavi Simons. It’s a nice and strong selection,” says the ambitious Van Aanholt after signing the lease in Eindhoven. General manager Marcel Brands emphasizes that PSV had to switch quickly after Max’s departure. “Due to the departure of Philipp, a vacancy had arisen that we were able to fill quickly with the arrival of Patrick.” It is no big surprise that Brands ended up at Van Aanholt. “We had tried it once in the past. We are very happy that we succeeded now.”

Van Aanholt thus succeeds Max, who has left for Eintracht Frankfurt, on the left side of the defense. The latter exchanged PSV for the number six in the Bundesliga this week. At that time, the people of Eindhoven were already in far-reaching negotiations with Van Aanholt, so that Max’s successor was already ready. The veteran has often been linked to PSV and it has now been possible to bring him back to the Netherlands. It Eindhovens Dagblad previously reported that the defender had to buy off his commitment to Galatasaray in order to join PSV, but this does not seem to be the case due to the rental deal.

Van Aanholt spent much of his career in England. The left back went from PSV to Chelsea at a young age, where he eventually played eight official games in the main force. After loan spells at five different clubs, including Vitesse, the left wing defender was sold to Sunderland in 2014. Three years later he moved to Crystal Palace, where he would play 134 matches. The nineteen-time the Dutch international has played for Galatasaray since the summer of 2021.
