Paris Saint-Germain have officially trumped Barcelona in the battle for Georginio Wijnaldum. The French superpower confirmed the arrival of the midfielder on Thursday through official channels. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Wijnaldum will earn an annual salary of 9.5 million euros, where El Chiringuito previously talked about eight million euros. Wijnaldum signs a contract for three seasons in Paris and is fixed in Paris until mid-2024.
From the camp of the Dutch national team, Wijnaldum says he is pleased with his transfer-free transfer from Liverpool to PSG. “Signing for Paris Saint-Germain means a new challenge for me,” Wijnaldum said after signing his contract on his new employer’s website. “I am joining one of the best teams in Europe and looking forward to putting all the energy into this team and this ambitious project. For a long time, Barcelona seemed to have the best papers to add Wijnaldum to the selection of coach Ronald Koeman. However, PSG intervened at the last minute in the fight for the the Dutch international’s signature. Unlike Barcelona, PSG managed to arrange all the details and preconditions associated with the transfer at a rapid pace. Within 48 hours Wijnaldum was medically examined in the Netherlands by the medical staff of PSG.
Wijnaldum was personally made enthusiastic by PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino for the switch to the French superpower, Romano wrote on Sunday. The PSG coach almost managed to get him to Tottenham Hotspur five years ago. However, Liverpool trumped the London club at the time. Barcelona is working on a plan B as Wijnaldum moves to Paris. according to ASH the club is investigating the possibilities to pluck Lorenzo Pellegrini from AS Roma. The 24-year-old midfielder is in the Italian capital for another year, which means that Barcelona has to come up with a transfer fee.
Wijnaldum has played for Liverpool since the summer of 2016. With the Reds he won the Champions League in 2019 at the expense of Tottenham Hotspur and won the Premier League in the 2019/20 season.
