Marc van Hintum made a remarkable revelation on Sunday morning. In the run-up to the Gelderse derby between Vitessen and NEC (Sunday at 2.30 p.m.), Good morning Eredivisie playful actions by both supporter groups and Van Hintum could talk about that. Years ago, he was the victim of an action, which incidentally was not carried out by a supporter group of NEC, but by a construction company from Nijmegen.

“A jointing company from Nijmegen had been in my house,” said Van Hintum, who played for Hannover 96 in Germany at the time, in the program of ESPN. While he had just moved into a new house in Arnhem, he suddenly had to deal with all kinds of leaks. “Everything had to be opened. Also the floor.” His plumber then discovered something remarkable. “He said, ‘Marc, I see a pattern. There are perfect round holes in all those pipes’”, says Van Hintum.

“So they just drilled holes in all my pipes. The last leak was only found after seven years. So I kept losing pressure in the boiler.” The former defender, who played eight times for the Dutch national team, can now laugh at the action of the Nijmegen company. “But I didn’t think it was that funny at the time. That actually happened. But both the supporter groups enjoy this derby so much. And they’ve missed it so much in the last few years that NEC didn’t play at the highest level. So everyone is happy.”

Last week, the supporters of Vitesse and NEC were less positive in the news. On Thursday night, supporters of the Arnhem club left offal at a memorial for a NEC supporter who died in 2015. It was probably an act of revenge after supporters of the Nijmegen residents left offal behind at Le Grand Cerf, the statue of the famous deer on Willemsplein in Arnhem.
