Besiktas suffered a particularly painful defeat in the Süper Lig three days after the defeat against Ajax in the Champions League. In front of the home crowd, Sergen Yalcin’s team lost 0-4 to PhD student Giresunspor on Saturday. It was the biggest home defeat for Besiktas in the Süper Lig since the 0-4 loss to Samsunspor in January 2004. Besiktas lost no less than ten of their last twelve official games. The reigning champion is tenth in the league.

In the first half, an absolute disaster scenario unfolded for Besiktas. The home team faced a 0-1 deficit at halftime, had received a red card and was unable to continue after the break with the injured Rachid Ghezzal. The opening goal fell halfway through the first act. Right back Valentin Rosier of Besiktas got the ball against the arm after a header from Serginho, which allowed Fousseni Diabaté to score from eleven meters. The Giresunspor attacker calmly hit the left corner. Six minutes before half time, Necip Uysal received a yellow card after a hard kick to the leg by Diabaté; after interference from the VAR, arbitrator Hüseyin Göçek chose a red print in the second instance.

Nine minutes after the break, Giresunspor extended the margin. Goalkeeper Mert Günok of Besiktas completely misjudged a long ball from Giresunspor defender Alexis Pérez: the out keeper wanted to head the ball away, but went under. It was therefore a breeze for Ibrahima Baldé to finish. Besiktas’ tens were not indifferent and became menacing via both Cyle Larin and Michy Batshuayi, but Giresunspor was able to strike again. Serginho made it 0-3 when he was able to use a rebound after Gunok saved Baldé’s shot.

Joey Pelupessy then made his entrance at Giresunspor as a substitute. Besiktas’ danger gradually decreased in the second half. Besiktas supporters were clearly dissatisfied with what they were presented with. They whistled Batshuayi and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou when they were substituted; the former responded by cynically applauding. Giresunspor kept a clean sheet without too many problems, even reaching 0-4: after a pass from Umut Nayir, goalkeeper Günok suddenly slipped, allowing Joseph Champness to score in an empty goal. Günok injured himself in his fall and was taken away on a stretcher.
