PSV is currently being hit hard by the corona virus. It Eindhovens Dagblad reports on Monday that quick tests will be conducted in the run-up to the Europa League game with Omonia Nicosia next Thursday. After these tests, trainer Roger Schmidt will determine which players are fit enough to make the trip to Cyprus.

Jordan Teze and Eran Zahavi went into quarantine during the most recent international period, as a result of which the pair missed the games against PEC Zwolle (0-3) and Granada (1-2). In last Sunday’s game with Vitesse (2-1), the defender and the attacker returned to PSV. In the meantime, Denzel Dumfries, Cody Gakpo, Pablo Rosario, Timo Baumgartl, Maxime Delanghe and Joël Piroe submitted a positive corona test. The six people were therefore missing in Arnhem on Sunday.

Schmidt already sounded the alarm on Sunday around PSV’s away match against Vitesse: “At the moment the virus is spreading completely uncontrollably in our team”, he was quoted as saying by the Eindhovens Dagblad. “The players have no complaints now. But what if someone ends up in the hospital or intensive care? Do we still think we should continue playing football?” Schmidt does not rule out that more corona cases will come to light during the rapid tests on Monday.

The German coach had only sixteen selection players available against Vitesse on Sunday, including three goalkeepers. The minimum during the corona crisis is fourteen players, thirteen field players and a goalkeeper. Young PSV also recently had a corona infection, which meant that Schmidt was unable to transfer players from the U21 team on Sunday. PSV’s final Europa League selection is expected to be announced on Tuesday. It seems unlikely that Dumfries, Gakpo, Rosario, Baumgartl, Delanghe and Piroe will travel to Cyprus.
