PEC Zwolle has put an end to a planned trip to Germany. The last of the Eredivisie would travel to Germany on Thursday to play a practice match against Hannover 96 on Friday. ‘Due to the current situation regarding the coronavirus’, PEC has decided to stay at home after all.

“A few positive cases have come to light within the selection in recent days. It has therefore been decided to cancel the practice match in Germany and to continue preparations for the restart of the competition in our own country,” PEC writes on its website. The team of trainer Dick Schreuder is currently at a training camp in Epe and will resume the competition next Friday with a home game against Willem II.

PEC is not the first Eredivisionist to remain in the Netherlands due to corona infections during the winter break. For example, Feyenoord and PSV canceled their training camp in Spain as a precaution. After SC Heerenveen, FC Utrecht is the second Eredivisie club to cancel a domestic training camp. Due to the many corona cases, it remains to be seen whether the resumption of the Eredivisie is not endangered. PEC kicks off the second half of the season on Friday 14 January with a home game against Willem II.

With six points from eighteen league games, the Zwolle players are the best candidate for relegation this season. The gap to number seventeen Fortuna Sittard is currently seven points. PEC is diligently looking for scoring ability and already secured the services of Oussama Darfalou and Max de Waal this week. The attacker of Vitesse and Ajax are rented until the end of the season.
