Patrick Vieira's adventure at RC Strasbourg has come to an end after just one season. The coach has decided in consultation with the club management to look for something new. His future may lie in the United States, where he is considered one of the candidates for the national coach position.

Vieira signed a three-year contract with Strasbourg last summer. Under the leadership of the former midfielder, the club finished 13th in Ligue 1, ten points above the relegation zone. A disappointing result for the club owned by BlueCo, co-owned by Chelsea owner Todd Boehly.

“The entire club would like to thank Patrick Vieira for his great commitment,” Strasbourg wrote in a statement. “In a transitional season, Patrick helped young talents to progress and always showed exemplary behaviour both on and off the pitch.”

Club president Marc Keller also praised the Arsenal legend. “We would like to express our gratitude and thank Patrick for the work he has done during this first phase of the project and we wish him every success in the future. He will always be welcome at the club.”

The exact reason for the split is still unknown. It may have to do with the interest of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). Vieira already has experience in the US, where he was in charge of Major League Soccer club New York City FC between January 2016 and June 2018.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Vieira is one of the names on the USSF's list. There are currently no serious negotiations, but the Senegalese-born Frenchman is a topic of conversation.

The USSF is looking for a successor to Gregg Berhalter, who was fired after failing to Team USA through the group stage of the Copa América in their own country. In addition to Vieira, Mauricio Pochettino is also one of the names being discussed. Jürgen Klopp previously politely declined the interest.
