Panathinaikos wants to strengthen itself on loan with Owen Wijndal, Mike Verweij reported on Tuesday in The TelegraphAlthough Ajax is open to cooperating on a temporary transfer of the left back, it remains to be seen whether an agreement will actually be reached.

The interest from the Greek club is remarkable, because if Ajax emerges as winner of the two-legged tie with Vojvodina, the Amsterdammers will possibly play against Panathinaikos in the next preliminary round.

According to reports, Wijndal himself is not necessarily interested in an adventure in Greece, while Ajax would be open to a temporary departure of the left back.

Wijndal may leave a good impression on coach Francesco Farioli, but the wing defender's wages are putting a considerable strain on Ajax's salary budget. If Panathinaikos were to take over the salary, there could be more room for other deals.

Despite his good performances in the preparation, Farioli does not currently have a starting spot in mind for Wijndal. The Italian coach now seems to be betting on Jorrel Hato as left back with Youri Baas as back-up.

Wijndal himself is convinced of his qualities and wants to use the coming period to make an even bigger impression. He does not seem to want to throw in the towel at Ajax for the time being and is currently not open to a departure.

In the summer of 2022, Wijndal was acquired from AZ for an amount of ten million euros. A year later, he was loaned to Royal Antwerp FC, after which he recently returned to Ajax. In Amsterdam, he still has a contract until mid-2027.
