Oussama Idrissi is one of the pillars of Feyenoord’s success this season. The wing attacker (27) now shows what he could not show at the beginning of his career in De Kuip. After several years in the youth academy, a breakthrough in the main force failed to materialize, followed by a departure for FC Groningen. Club icon Willem van Hanegem already announced at the time that Feyenoord made a mistake by letting Idrissi go so fast.

“I really appreciate it that someone like Willem van Hanegem wrote that”, the grateful Idrissi says in an extensive interview with the General Journal. “He thought I was good enough for Feyenoord’s first team, but I didn’t think so myself. Maybe if I could have matured for a year in the second team, but that team didn’t exist at Feyenoord. That was arranged differently at other clubs. I really had to take steps, which I succeeded in Groningen and later at AZ.” Idrissi also had a not too successful rental period at Ajax in the Netherlands.

Idrissi, who calls Arne Slot the best trainer he has experienced so far, does not yet know whether he will stick to a second season at Feyenoord. “I will be under contract with Sevilla for another two seasons after the summer. In principle, I will just go back to that club.” The attacker has made just seventeen appearances for the Spaniards since 2020 and has been loaned out twice. “It is difficult to look ahead now. First we have to play seven more great league games, now we are in the semi-finals of the cup and in the Europa League we are in the last eight. Believe me, thinking about next season is I think it’s still very far away.”

For Idrissi, the results of the coming weeks will play an important role in his decision-making. “If you are a scout from a big club, then you still want to get a player from the champion of the Netherlands?”, the mercenary wonders aloud. “And Feyenoord itself will also have more opportunities in the financial field if we win prizes. I’m having a great time here, but I’ve never really thought about playing football longer in De Kuip,” concludes Idrissi.
