The match between the Dutch national team and Ukraine (3-2) attracted no less than 5.4 million viewers on Sunday evening, according to figures from Stichting Kijkonderzoek. The program was by far the most watched program and even came close to being the most watched broadcast of this calendar year. Only the Eurovision Song Contest attracted more viewers. At the end of May, two thousand more people watched it.

With 5.4 million viewers, NPO1 was good for a market share of eighty percent on Sunday. Also Studio Europe, the follow-up afterglow program of the public broadcaster, accounted for a considerable market share of 54 percent with 1.8 million viewers. The market share of the men from Veronica Inside, on the other hand, was much lower. Wilfred Genee and his dinner guests knew with The the Dutch Summer 530,000 viewers and was thus good for a market share of fourteen percent.

Dick Advocaat said in May that the Eurovision Song Contest would not attract nearly as many viewers as football. The Feyenoord coach responded to the problems surrounding the final of the play-offs for European football in De Kuip. “If you see how many people watch football. Only a limited number of people watch the Eurovision Song Contest,” said Advocaat at the time. “What is more important? I rank football higher than the Eurovision Song Contest.”

The European Championship not only dominated the viewing figures on the late evening, because the game between Austria and North Macedonia (3-1) was also good for 1.3 million viewers. The viewing figures have been good from the start of the European Championship, as last Friday’s opening match between Italy and Turkey attracted 2.3 million viewers.
