Memphis Depay gave the the Dutch squad the desired start on Thursday evening in the group match against Austria in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The forward made no mistake when he was allowed to score for a penalty in the eleventh minute, after David Alaba stepped on the foot of Denzel Dumfries. Depay is now on 27 goals in 66 international matches in the shirt in the Dutch and with that the striker is approaching the top ten of all-time top scorers of the Dutch.

Depay has been in excellent form in any case since the appointment of Frank de Boer as national coach of the Dutch. Since the first international match of Ronald Koeman’s successor in October last year, against Mexico (0-1), only Romelu Lukaku (10 goals) has scored more than Depay (8 goals). The the Dutch striker did not score in the opening game against Ukraine (3-2) on Sunday, when he also formed an attacking duo with Wout Weghorst.

The accurate against Austria Depay still needs some goals to equal all-time top scorer Robin van Persie (50 goals). The top three is further completed by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (42 goals) and Patrick Kluivert (40 goals). The top ten is currently closed by record international Wesley Sneijder, who managed to find the net 31 times in 134 international matches on behalf of the the Dutch.
