There is much anger in Turkey about a controversial moment in the European Championship match against the Netherlands (2-1 loss) on Saturday evening. Several media outlets are citing a hard foul in the first half by Xavi Simons and are calling for a red card.

In the thirtieth minute of the match, Simons tried to play the ball away with the outside of his foot. Under pressure from the opponent, the attacking midfielder of Oranje unfortunately but ugly stepped on the shin of Mert Müldür.

The right back of Turkey screamed in pain. Referee Clément Turpin showed a yellow card to Simons. “A scandalous decision”, according to the Turkish sports newspaper fanatic.
