Rotterdam-Zuid was again startled by an explosion at a Feyenoord café in the night from Thursday to Friday. The incident took place at café The Hide Away on the Kreekplein, it is known Algemeen Dagblad report Friday morning. No one was hurt. Earlier this week, café ‘t Haantje op Zuid, also a well-known Feyenoord pub, was the target.

Around half past one last night an explosive went off in cafe The Hide Away and it is suspected that it was a firework bomb. Residents heard a loud bang and immediately called in the fire brigade. There was no fire in the pub, but there was a lot of smoke development. The damage after the explosion is extensive. The fire brigade was able to prevent further damage by opening the ceiling from the inside and extinguishing the fire in time. Due to the fast and resolute action, the fire could not spread further to other surrounding buildings.

The Rotterdam police cannot yet say whether there is a connection between the explosions at The Hide Away and café ‘t Haantje. Also no announcements can be made about a possible connection with the Classic against Ajax on Sunday. Rob de Kreek, co-owner of café The Hide Away, is ‘deathly ill’ from the fireworks bomb that was thrown into his building through the letterbox. “Even the rear window of the kitchen has been blown out and the facade has been dismayed. Fortunately, there was no fire, there was just a lot of smoke,” according to a statement on Facebook. The owner of the cafe hopes to be able to reopen soon after the police investigation. “Although we fear that as a result of the closure of ‘t Haantje, we too will have to remain closed for the time being.” Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb has closed café ‘t Haantje for two weeks. What will happen with The Hide Away is not yet known.

A fundraising campaign has now been started to support The Hide Away financially. On Friday morning, 1,200 euros had already been collected. Almost at the same time as the explosion at the café, an explosive went off in the Rotterdam district of Hoogvliet. Eight families had to leave their homes temporarily as a result. Later in the night from Thursday to Friday there was an explosion at an apartment building in Rotterdam-Schiebroek. In this case too, people had to temporarily leave their homes.
