René van der Gijp gives Louis van Gaal credits for drafting Davy Klaassen in the last three games for the the Dutch squad. ‘s analyst Veronica Inside had not chosen to put the Ajax midfielder in the base, but saw Van Gaal’s choice work out extremely well. “Of course he did,” admits Van der Gijp.

Klaassen made the equalizer against Norway (1-1) and was important against Turkey (6-1 win) with the beautiful opening goal and the ‘kickback assist’ on Memphis Depay. “I don’t think many would have put our friend in the team,” says Van der Gijp. “He did put him in the team and he played two great games. Against Turkey was by far the best game of his career. It’s a kind of Denzel Dumfries, isn’t it. He radiates a lot of energy. This is brilliant,” says Van der Gijp, looking at Klaassen’s assist on Depay against Turkey.

Johan Derksen adds that Klaassen also scores ‘a great deal’ for a midfielder. There is also discussion in the talk show about the other positions in the Dutch. For example, Steven Bergwijn, who had a chance in the base against Turkey due to the injury of Cody Gakpo, stood out in a positive sense at Van der Gijp. “I thought Bergwijn played really well,” said the former right winger. “But of course it is important that that boy will play a whole season at Tottenham Hotspur. If he comes to six or seven games again this year, that is simply too little to put him in such a position.”

Van der Gijp also gives a clear assignment to Gakpo. “If you really want to do well as a left winger, shoot 20. That’s not too much.” While the left flank is nicely occupied by the Dutch, the right side of the attack continues to be a cause for concern. “Steven Berghuis is not an international top”, Van der Gijp knows, who also sees no alternatives. “That’s not Arjen Robben, Kingsley Coman or Mohamed Salah. But it’s fine against these kinds of countries.”
