Thijs Oosting may have played his last game of the season. Willem II’s 21-year-old midfielder has suffered a serious knee injury during training and needs surgery, the Tilburg club announced on Friday via its official channels. The injury is a major loss for Willem II and Oosting. The midfielder had only played three games since his arrival from AZ this winter.

Exactly how serious the injury is is not disclosed by Willem II. The club speaks of a ‘severe knee injury’. The midfielder dropped out during training on Thursday. Research in the hospital has shown that he is forced to go under the knife. Nothing can be said about the duration of Oosting’s absence and it ‘depends on the progress of the recovery’, according to the club’s website.

Oosting was taken over from AZ in the winter and signed a contract until mid-2026. He started energetically at his new employer with two hits against RKC Waalwijk (3-1 win), where his father Joseph Oosting works as a trainer. He also completed the ninety minutes in the subsequent matches against Sparta Rotterdam and Ajax. Last season, Oosting spent the second half of the season on a rental basis for RKC Waalwijk.
