Stefan de Vrij is high on Newcastle United’s wish list, reports The Times. The Magpies want to considerably strengthen their selection in January and the 29-year-old defender of Internazionale is an interesting option, partly because of his contract expiring in mid-2023. Previously, De Vrij was La Republica already linked to Tottenham Hotspur.

Since its takeover by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, there has been a marked shift in the category of players viewed by Newcastle. The Premier League club mainly focuses on Serie A and sees De Vrij as a potential transfer target. Newcastle has already conceded 24 goals in 11 league games this season and is eagerly looking for a defensive leader who can strengthen the team in January. De Vrij is still in Milan for another year and a half and therefore may not have to cost the top prize, is the thought in Newcastle.

In addition to De Vrij, Newcastle has also aimed its arrows at his teammate Marcelo Brozovic, according to the British quality newspaper. The midfielder will run out of his contract with Inter on July 1, 2022 and talks with Inter club management about an extension have not yet produced any white smoke. According to the Times Thomas Strakosha of SS Lazio is also in the picture with the English to strengthen the goalkeepers guild at St. James’ Park.

Finally, Aaron Ramsey is also an option for Newcastle. The Juventus midfielder has made no secret of his ambition to return to the Premier League. His current salary of around €475,000 a week, however, is still a stumbling block, as Allan Saint-Maximin, Newcastle’s top earner, earns less than a quarter of that amount. Newcastle will face Brentford in the Premier League this Saturday. The new trainer Eddie Howe will then sit on the bench for the first time.
