Newcastle United won the charged Tyne-Wear derby visiting Sunderland on Saturday afternoon. The score was 0-3 in the Stadium of Light, thanks to an own goal by Daniel Ballard and two goals by Alexander Isak. With the win, Newcastle joins the last sixteen clubs in the FA Cup, while Sunderland is eliminated.

It is one of the most famous derbies in England: the Tyne-Wear derby, also known as the North East derby, between Sunderland and Newcastle United. The cities are only nineteen kilometers apart, which creates the necessary rivalry.

However, the match had not been played for a long time, which had everything to do with Sunderland's relegation from the Premier League in 2016. As a result, the last Tyne-Wear derby before Saturday took place on March 20, 2016. It ended in Newcastle upon Tyne then in 1-1.

On Saturday it was finally time again. Sunderland started the match with eighteen-year-old Jobe Bellingham, the brother of Real Madrid player Jude Bellingham, in the starting line-up. At Newcastle, Sven Botman started in the heart of the defense.

Newcastle largely dominated the game in the first half and took a 0-1 lead after 35 minutes of play. Joelinton accelerated on the left side of the field and passed the ball towards Isak. However, in an attempt to intercept the ball, defender Ballard turned it into his own goal.

The second half was only thirty seconds old when it became 0-2. Pierre Ekwah lost the ball on the edge of his own penalty area. Miguel Almirón – who won the ball – then laid it wide for Isak, and the former Willem II player hit the target.

Sunderland tried to come up with an answer, saw Alex Pritchard hit the top of the crossbar, but also fell behind 0-3 just before the end. Anthony Gordon was brought down in the penalty area by Ballard, after which Isak converted the penalty awarded. This made the first Tyne-Wear derby in almost eight years a prey for Newcastle.
