Stefan Kuntz must become the new national coach of Turkey, according to various Turkish media. The Turkish Football Association is looking for a new person ultimately responsible after the dismissal of Senol Günes last week, who was fired after the ear washing against the the Dutch (6-1). Several trainers were subsequently associated with national coaching, with Kuntz coming out as the best. The German is currently the national coach of Young Germany, with whom he became European champion at the beginning of June.

Rumors about the new national coach have accelerated after Kuntz was spotted at Istanbul airport after a meeting with Hamit Altintop, the new manager of the Turkish football association TFF. Kuntz reacted to the surfaced images via social media. “I was in Istanbul at the invitation of the TFF, but at the moment there is no news of an agreement,” emphasized the German.

Kuntz, former German international and former player of Besiktas, VfL Bochum and Arminia Bielefeld, among others, has been employed by the German Football Association since 2016. The coach successively trained the Under-21 and Under-23. This summer he became European champion with Young Germany by beating Young Portugal 1-0 in the final. In the semi-final of the same European Championship, the Germans were 2-1 too strong for the Netherlands. Kuntz has a good track record of working with young players in Germany and should guide Turkey to the World Cup in Qatar. The Turks currently occupy third place behind the Netherlands and Norway.

The search for a new national coach started after Günes said goodbye last week, who was at the helm of the Turkish team for 32 games. He achieved fifteen wins, drew ten times and lost seven times. The dismissal of Günes did not come completely out of the blue. Prior to the match against the Netherlands, the pressure on the trainer’s shoulders had already grown after the 2-2 draw against Montenegro. Günes, ex-trainer of Trabzonspor, Bursaspor and Besiktas, among others, has been the Turkish national coach since 2019.
